Stem cells are miracles of life and healing made by every human and animal body on Earth. While the body also makes skin cells, bone cells and muscle cells, it makes a steady supply of stem cells that can develop into any specialized type of cell the body might need. For this reason, they are called “unspecialized” cells.
As a stem cell divides in two, each cell can either remain a stem cell or become a specialized cell needed to heal the body. Genetic signaling tells these new cells what they need to become and they gradually develop into this needed cell as they go through multiple divisions. Stem cells are unique in that they can divide and create new cells indefinitely, whereas other cells in the body can wear out and must be replaced.
When we are young and growing, our bodies are rich in stem cells. As we age, we have fewer of these stem cells so our ability to heal slows down. Supplying a patient with healthy, viable stem cells enables their bodies to use these cells to repair and restore damaged tissues that their own bodies don’t have sufficient power to heal.
Wharton’s Jelly derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
In our treatments, we focus on the use of Wharton’s Jelly derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to help our patients recover lost function. MSCs are a particular type of stem cell that possess an enhanced ability to develop into bone, cartilage, parts of the circulatory system, muscles and connective tissue. When a person suffers from injuries or structural problems related to aging, these are the most likely tissues to need repair.
To provide patients with this type of stem cell, we go to one of the body’s richest and viable sources of MSCs: Wharton’s Jelly.
Wharton’s Jelly is the name given to the jelly like tissue within an umbilical cord that supports the vein and arteries connecting the mother and baby. This jelly is high in undifferentiated cells — cells that have not yet developed into a specialized type of cell like bone or muscle.
Umbilical tissue is normally discarded at birth. With the consent of the mother, the jelly is carefully harvested from the inner parts of the cord. The mesenchymal stem cells in this tissue are then extracted and prepared for injection into inflamed, damaged knees, shoulders, wrists and other parts of the body.
These cells offer anti-inflammatory benefits and support repair and regrowth of damaged tissues. Pain is reduced and function begins to improve, often within days.
